Snobbishness and condescension ooze from every sentence of Mr. Douthats essay, and his one-size-fits-all dismissal of the films screened at the American Film Renaissance festival (the festivals movies were often awful in fascinating ways, but they were awful nonetheless) strikes me as typical liberal shallowness. How could he make such a blanket statement if he had seen the excellent documentary Entertaining Vietnam, a film that has won best-documentary awards in multiple film festivals around the U.S.? And it appears he did not take the time to see our documentary, Silent Victory (which has received positive reviews from audiences liberal and conservative), before painting us with the same negative brush. Not only that, but apparently Mr. Douthat felt he had to make snide remarks about the physical characteristics of festival founders Jim and Ellen Hubbard (bouffant hair, heavyset man with a hangdog air). Of what relevance could his opinion of what they look like be to the content of the films in the festival?
STARSHIP TROOPERS (15) What better way to start the new film year than with the latest blood- soaked, limb-cracking epic adventure about a do-or-die battle to save the world from unspeakable otherworldly aliens? Sounds familiar? No, not More Men In Black or Independence Day 2. Anyone with a passing knowledge of those bad Hollywood B-movies of the Fifties will easily recognise the basic formula of this gleefully inflated Nineties variety of the species as a team of well-scrubbed, cliche-spouting all-American heroes take on disgusting giant bugs from the distant Planet Klendathu.

Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

The theory is nice: if you mandate banks to report all significant or suspicious financial transactions, you can track funds used to finance terror organisations. If you can track those funds, you can also block them. If you can block those funds, then terrorism will stop because it will go bankrupt. Acting on this theory, the US has put great pressure on Arab governments, particularly those in the Gulf, to `adopt stringent new bank monitoring and reporting standards. There has been no definition of terrorism to reinforce the targets set by the US and its allies, said one Dubai-based commentator. Is there any difference between terrorist acts and economic wars?

RiskTracker-AML offers the compliance analysis and loss prevention screening our clients can rely on. Its quality is reinforced by successful audits such as this. Faced with the rapidly shifting, often harsh realities of managed care, medical educators across the nation are training more doctors outside of hospitals and adding new courses in economics, ethics, law, and even how to document treatment decisions. “Its an interesting phenomenon because medical schools in the past have not generally been about economics and business,” said John McCahn, associate dean of academic affairs at Boston University Medical School. “All of a sudden we have to deal with the notion that students cannot walk out of our doors totally naive about the world in which they will be working.” Mary Lee, dean of educational affairs at the four-year-old Managed Care Institute of the Tufts University Medical School, said the change has a philosophical dimension as well. “The students coming in today understand there is a shifting and expanded role for the physician,” she said. “We have a responsibility to. get them thinking about what ideal managed care should be, so they can go out and try to attain that goal.” The changes take many forms. A course in public health at BU for first-year medical students, for instance, now includes a section on law and medicine taught by a researcher in health-care economics. At Harvard Medical School, among many other institutions, there is an emphasis on “health- policy training” and on teaching ethics because todays doctors routinely have to weigh costs against benefits in ways that previous generations did not. And at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, all third-year medical students must attend a two-day symposium at which issues relating to managed care are taught and discussed. Comparable course additions and alterations are becoming commonplace across the nation. Moreover, in a strong indication that the new approach is taking hold, the American Association of Medical Schools last year began sending out recommendations for broad curriculum changes that incorporate many of the fiscal, ethical and procedural realities of managed care. “This certainly is the biggest shift in medical education in decades, at least. and maybe since the early part of the century,” said Gregory Pawlson, associate director for health affairs at George Washington University Medical Center. In one telling departure from the past, a growing number of medical students — including at BU — are now taught to document their decisions and actions in detailed ways, and for reasons, that didnt exist before. In managed-care practices, such records typically become part of a communal pool of data that can be used for medical purposes by other doctors — a practice praised even by critics of managed care. But there is concern about another use for such records: Insurance firms and corporate executives review them, in part to help assess the performance and set the salaries of individual doctors. The most dramatic changes in medical education are taking place in on-the-job training, as students spend more time learning at outpatient facilities like managed-care offices, rather than in emergency rooms and elsewhere in hospitals.
At altitude, the first enemy is the environment. The second enemy is the human foe.1 The Chien Man Shu, circa 30 BCE, describes altitude Illness among travelers to an area in present-day eastern Afghanistan. “On passing the Great Headache Mountain. mens bodies become feverish, they lose color, and are attacked with headache and vomiting: the asses and cattle being all in like condition.”2 The worlds armies have suffered the deleterious effects of altitude for as long as they have battled in the mountains. Despite a distinguished history of medium- and low-altitude combat operations in World War II. during which the Armys 10th Mountain Division proved its utility as an elite mountain-trained force in combat in the rugged Italian Alps. U.S. military forces had no experience in truly high mountainous terrain before Operation Enduring Freedom. Today, as the U.S. military continues its conversion to a domestically based, rapidly deployable, expeditionary force primed to travel anywhere, anytime, to support any contingency, soldiers, medics, and physicians must prepare for a wider array of deployment destinations and environmental hazards, including high altitude and mountainous terrain.

Darren Rea reports Research is being undertaken, on behalf of the government, into the potential harmful effects of using mobile phones, after the Department of Health admitted that no one really knows what the true effects are. This is a spectacular about-turn by the government, which has already condemned several reports outlining the possible threat of the amount of specific absorption rate (SAR) of radio energy our bodies receive from using mobile phones.

BANNER ADVERTISEMENTSAlthough purchasing advertising space on Web sites can be expensive, it is an increasingly important marketing tactic for small businesses seeking to establish an online presence. Experts suggest that Internet advertisingwhether through banners or through smaller, sponsored by notes on Web sitesis the easiest and most effective way to encourage potential customers to visit your companys Web site. In addition, sophisticated new Web technology allows small businesses to focus their advertising dollars on specific geographic or demographic groups. Web-page sponsorship quickly increases traffic at your site by giving you almost instant access to the established viewer bases of other sites, Paul J. Dowling wrote in Web Advertising and Marketing. Your company canand shouldsponsor as many Web sites as it can afford, but you should be somewhat selective about the sites you sponsor. Be sure the sites you choose are of a general nature or are in some way related to your field of business. And make absolutely certain they dont conflict with the goals and/or themes of your site.
FRITH STREET GALLERY Banner achieves a remarkable range of forms by expanding full stops in different fonts to 1800 point size and then projecting them into three-dimensional objects: cubes, spheres, ellipsoids, and other less orthodox shapes of quite varying sizes. Placed around the floor of the gallery, these sculptural presences require the viewer to navigate a passage through the space rather than simply move across it, recalling the way in which periods help populate the narrative landscape with identifiable features to be negotiated. With Banners “Full Stops,” the deliberation involved in such maneuvers is particularly striking because of the otherwise ephemeral nature of the works. Being polystyrene, a disposable substance that usually occupies the space around an object (in packaging, for instance), they possess only a qualified palpability. Conversely, it is the drawings of periods in the same enlarged point size, with their thickly overworked blocks of solid graphite, that signify a more thorough-going materiality. Pl aced low on large sheets of paper, as a period appears at the base of a line of type, the dense sheen of the graphite seems to weigh down the lower edge of the paper, which is only loosely fastened to the wall. Seen in conjunction with one another, the sculptures and drawings cause a sequence of slippages between image, word (both written and spoken), object, and idea. Beyond all this is the knowledge that these works are made possible only through the incorporation of computer technology into the printing process. A “dot matrix” period, for example, is four circles arranged in a square, while the “Grafitti” stop drawing explodes Outward from a central area into a spray of droplets and “ink” mist, myriad carefully worked blobs and dots that cover much of the paper. Here, type is revealed as a set of instructions within which it is possible to incorporate the workings of chance, so that each period, even if it is recognizably in the same font, is unique.

LAW IN BUSINESSLaw governs and regulates virtually all aspects of the business process, from the right to engage in a business or trade, to the legal form of a business, to agreements for buying and selling merchandise or rendering services. Law regulates the quality of products sold and the advertising of products for sale. Law governs the employment relationship, protects business property, and taxes business income. This article explores the relationship of business and law in several of these areas.Business in the United States is regulated by federal and state laws as well as by local ordinances. State law regulating forms of business, business agreements, and some taxes is the most important. Federal law regulates such things as advertising, civil rights, and protection of such property as inventions. Local law typically regulates business hours, where one can do business (zoning), and health and safety.
Negotiating The Fraud Exclusion It is important for policyholders to understand, however, that the exact wording of the exclusion can differ substantially from policy to policy. This can have important practical ramifications for directors and officers. For example, in some instances, the terms of the exclusion may allow an insurance company to refuse to provide a director or officer with a defense to a claim in a lawsuit asserting fraud; the director or officer therefore will be obligated to retain and pay for his or her own attorney. In other situations, the exclusion only may prohibit an insurance company from indemnifying a director or officer once fraud has been proven in the underlying lawsuit; the director or officer is much more likely to avoid having to pay any costs out-of-pocket with this form of the exclusion.

DEFENCE chiefs have set up a special rehab clinic to treat soldiers for drugs addiction. Around 170 troops have so far attended the clinic after testing positive for cannabis or amphetamines. The “second-chance” move comes amid increasing concern over the 600 or so soldiers - the equivalent of a whole battalion - being lost from the forces each year over drugs. In the past they have been automatically kicked out.

A typical punishment used to be “six of the best” from the house captain in front of the whole school, and for really serious crimes, instant expulsion. But now Eton College, the most famous public school in the world, has decided to alter its approach to one of the worst of schoolboy crimes - drug-taking. From next month, the school that since its foundation in 1440 has educated generations of royalty and produced 19 prime ministers, will launch a Priory-style drug rehab programme for its well-heeled teenage pupils. “In the past year, we have lost a couple of boys to drugs. I have no doubt that drugs are a significant temptation to our pupils,” said Mr Little. “We are revising our policy so that pupils of concern can attend counselling and rehabilitation programmes.”

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

Of 79 men in whom clinical and laboratory examinations revealed no organic cause for their impotence; 20 men received testosterone, 21 received trazodone, 20 underwent hypnosis and 18 served as placebo controls. They were assessed by interview 4, 6 and 8 weeks after starting treatment: the patients reports were verified by interviewing their partners. Placebo men had a 39% improvement in sexual function v. rates of improvement in the testosterone, trazodone and hypnosis groups of 60%, 67% and 80%, respectively, none of which reached significance. COMMENT: Although the improvement was not statistically significant, probably because of the small numbers of subjects involved, the differences were wide, especially in comparison to placebo. Treatment with testosterone and trazodone could be used as an adjuvant therapy in nonorganic male sexual dysfunction, and hypnosis appeared to be the most superior to placebo. A more effective treatment may be obtained by combining these therapeutic modalities. Hypnosis, as I have noted before, continues to be markedly underused, and has great potential to engage and harness the inner pharmacy within each patient.

epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.
The giddiness and glee over heroin in Please Kill Me is replaced by a sense of small-time tragedy in But Beautiful, because the book takes place where both the pleasure and the pain are, because the book can orchestrate silence as well as noise. Writing on Chet Baker - once the ingenue of jazz, then its lizard-faced junkie poster boy - Dyer, seeking that place where all art begins, can make a complete fool of himself: He could only play with such tenderness because hed never known real tenderness in his life. And Dyer can get to places few writers on music know exist - He was the opposite of his friend Art, who put everything of himself into everything he played: Chet put nothing of himself into his music and thats what lent his playing his pathos. The music he played felt abandoned by him.His friend Art - Id read that passage four times before I caught the pun, which Dyer may never have placed there. But the book is so driven by its need to get close to the art that sparked it you can find the like of that phrase all across it, hidden on any given page. Here there is no scene, only a music that begins in solipsism and refuses it. In Please Kill Me there is not even isolation, at least until the last pages. And yet all you had to do to prove that there is an irreducible music at the core of the book that denies the reality of inner lives was to catch Nikes Search and Destroy commercial during the Olympics: a montage of violent sports images running over a twenty-three-year-old Stooges song that the world outside of the one Please Kill Me describes hasnt begun to catch up with.
This academic satire is about two professors and their families. Howard Belsey is a white secular liberal, a specialist in Rembrandt, who is engaged in ideological warfare with a visiting professor, Monty Kippes, a conservative Christian scholar from Trinidad. Each character in the story is undermined by his or her self-deceptions. Howards attachment to theoretical knowledge seems to preclude understanding or controlling his adulterous behavior. Smith brilliantly draws these and other characters and gently but wittily pierces their illusions and pretensions. Howards African-American wife, Kiki, is one of the few characters to offer emotional or moral ballast, along with her son Jerome, who rejects his parents secularism for a newfound Christianity.

Domestic commercial banks reported a further easing of lending standards and terms for commercial and industrial (CI) loans and commercial real estate loans during the prior three months. At U.S. branches and agencies of foreign banks, in contrast, lending standards and terms for these types of loans were little changed during the same period. On net, domestic banks experienced stronger demand for CI loans during the past three months, while foreign institutions indicated that demand for business loans was about unchanged. Both domestic and foreign institutions reported stronger demand for commercial real estate loans, on balance. A notable net fraction of domestic respondents reported stronger demand for loans to purchase homes during the past three months, while a small net percentage of banks also experienced a strengthening in demand for consumer loans. On net, credit standards for residential mortgages and consumer loans were about unchanged in the July survey, but a significant proportion of respondents indicated increased willingness to make consumer installment loans.

Owner-occupied housing is both a source of shelter and, like other physical and financial assets, an investment. Equity in a house is a substantial part of the overall wealth of two-thirds of all households in the United States who are homeowners.1 For most homeowners, their house is easily their largest single investment. An important consideration for homeowners is how their homeownership should influence the composition of their investment portfolio. One opinion sometimes heard is that, because they already own real estate, homeowners do not need, and should perhaps even avoid, other investments in real estate. This perception is likely one reason why only 6% of all “defined contribution” retirement plans even offer participants the option to invest in real estate funds (PSCA, 2001).

THE saying boys dont make passes at girls who wear glasses is no longer true - just look at the impact of designer spectacles on todays fashion scene. If you wear glasses, you can use them to make a fashion statement, even if you cant afford Calvin Klein or Donna Karan frames. The most important things to keep in mind when choosing spectacles are the shape of your face, and your facial features. Choose a pair that will accentuate your good points, and minimise your bad ones.

ROGER HILTON: THE FIGURED LANGUAGE OF THOUGHT by Andrew Lambirth Thames Hudson, £35, pp. 288, ISBN 9780500093344 £28 (plus £2.45 pp) 0870 429 6655 Perhaps it accounts for the surprising fact that this is the first major study to be published of the life and work of a much loved and extremely influential artist. In his concluding chapter Lambirth considers the reasons why Hilton has not received the critical attention he deserves: his work was too various; his career (interrupted by the war: in spite of poor sight, a chronic skin condition and varicose veins he was a Commando, captured in the Dieppe Raid) too short; he was too awkward a customer and his reputation in Britain has remained under a polite cloud. Also, though he admired American art in the 1950s, he was, as his Times obituary noted, perhaps the last major artist to be entirely free of American influences.
Which goes to show how much the popular images of Lennon and McCartney have clouded the truth. Leaving aside the merits of McCartneys paintings - of which more later - and the fact that he doesnt claim anything much for them at all, the idea that he knows nothing of serious art just doesnt stand up. McCartney was always more radical than he seemed; always, perhaps, the most radical Beatle. Even in the groups heyday, he was intimately involved with the contemporary art scene. “I dont want to get into one of those `Na-na-na-na-nah, I did it first things,” he says today, “but I was living a very rich avant-garde life at that time. The thing is that when I got into it, I just got on and did it. I never talked about it. Then when John got into the scene with Yoko, he jumped into it and made a big thing about it.” One of McCartneys closest friends in those days was the art dealer Robert Fraser, whom he describes today as “a formative art influence”. Through Fraser, McCartney got to know artists including Claes Oldenburg, Richard Hamilton and Peter Blake. “I was into that whole scene,” he recalls. “The point was that I could. The other guys were married and living out near Weybridge, but I was on my own in this big house in St Johns Wood. It got to be almost like a salon at times - showing movies Id made to Antonioni, getting into Stockhausen, meeting Luciano Berio, Robert Fraser bringing Andy Warhol over to watch Empire [Warhols eight-hour film of the Empire State Building].”

Tall windows over the beds and a dramatic painted finish on the walls enhance the rooms sense of spaciousness and style. “The bedroom is located along the front of the house directly off the foyer,” says owner Kay Fuller. “Because the room is so visible, I wanted the design to be special.” The rooms three windows might have posed problems for some, but Kay took full advantage of their stature and position. “The windows along the front of the house are 10 feet tall, while the side one is only 8 feet,” she says. For consistency, she mounted wooden box valances on all three windows at the same height. Rather than cover them with a fabric, Kay had the artist who did the walls paint a pattern on the valances to complement the faux finish. Simple brown linen draperies provide privacy.
Unfortunately, I have to face the fact that I havent been a teenager for a while now and the bedroom of a rural housewife might not be such a draw. Still, that doesnt mean it isnt worth thinking about. I could put the camera in a room where the results might appeal to people who spend more time fantasising about country living than teenage girls. The morning-room (which still doubles as our drawing-room), for example. Im usually dressed when Im using it and if this house were open to the public that would be one of the rooms wed invite people to see. From our point of view the advantage of film over public access is that a camera is relatively unobtrusive, being unlikely to make a lot of noise or walk off with the snuffboxes. While a camera would offer website subscribers a true picture, not just of the room, but its use. Me opening my letters, smoking a Nicorette Inhalator. The room empty for several days. The dog wandering in. The room empty again. The children running through it. The room tidied by beautiful housekeeper in very short shorts. Then a climax - the room full of weekend guests saying indiscreet things. On reflection, perhaps the morning-room wouldnt be such a good choice. Or the dining-room. The telly-room is a possibility. It has a huge gothic fireplace, Peruvian mummy wrappings and Indian phallus coverers which give it the warmth and drama of a Hammer House of Horror film set. Furthermore, we spend a good deal of time in it. By evening youd get the children sitting together on one sofa cushion, their laps covered by a dozen smaller cushions, frozen as if in a photograph. By night youd see me shouting at the television or sobbing in front of it. The dog staring very intently at Peter. Peter fast asleep, dressed in a green wool, hooded kaftan. Tin Tin meets the leprechaun St Francis. And by day youd get me again, watching that lovely, lovely Ed Stourton on the 1 oclock news (well, clearly, its vital that Im up to the moment with current events. You never know when you might get the Call). The trouble is that while having a camera in the TV room would certainly give an authentic impression of country living, it could be argued that Internet surfers might confuse it with the website of someone who lives on entirely the wrong kind of estate. The kind with more drug dealers than gamekeepers. It would all be so much easier if I was a teenager. Which reminds me, there is the nanny. I grant you shes in her twenties, but that still makes her . . . months younger than me. Employers use spy cameras on their nannies these days, dont they? Why not just re-transmit the images on the Internet? I suppose she might not care for the idea. And theres probably some law against it. So, its back to my bedroom and my fantasy. There are 100 million people out there who want to see me in my bedsocks. And, if they are very lucky and have a spare 10, they can.
Motorcycle Clothing
August 19th, 2008
MIAMI — Jewish motorcyclists? Yes, amazingly they exist, and theres a whole lot more of them than you think - actually more than 50,000 nationwide. Even though nice Jewish boys arent supposed to ride motorcycles, they do, so they might as well wear Kosher clothing, its the least they can do to keep their mothers and wives happy. Well, technically the clothing isnt actually kosher, says Jeff Mustard, founder of King David Bikers and the man behind the creation of the clothing and chachkas line that consists of more than two-dozen products, but theyre not traif either. Reading the merchandise descriptions in the Clothing Chachkas Catalogue is almost as much fun as actually wearing the shirts or drinking from the coffee cups. Mustard, a former stand-up comedian turned professional comedy writer and producer put his wit to work in developing the KDB Gear line. The club logo and shirts were an instant hit, says Mustard, and according to the Brooklyn-born biker whos now a Florida-native, the shirts flew off the table at their Sunday morning ride meetings faster than you could say sale at Loehmans. Everywhere we went people wanted the shirts, Jews and non-Jews alike.
I am nominating Natasha Karlin, 15, for Youth of the Day. Natasha is a sophomore at Shawnee Heights High School. She is in the school orchestra and has been playing the violin since third grade. She is a brown belt in Kempo karate, and is a dirt bike motorcycle rider. She recently successfully completed a motorcycle safety course and is now able to ride street legal motorcycles with the rest of us. She has her learners permit for vehicles, as well as motorcycles. Of course, she wants a car, typical of a kid her age. She is meticulous about her hair and clothes. She loves her music - — all kinds except country — and Seventeen magazine. She aspires to be a model some day.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Credit Card Debt
August 19th, 2008
Overall about 17 percent of Americans are either very or moderately worried about not being able to make the minimum payments on their credit cards. Another 22 percent say they are not too worried, and 46 percent say they are not worried at all.
If you want to be the master of your credit card debt load, follow these key rules: 1. Take inventory. How many credit cards do you have? Whats the balance and minimum monthly payment on each? Whats the total balance? If its more than you thought or can afford, its time to pare down. 3. Get one low-fee or lower-interest card and use it wisely. Make your local bank or credit union your first stop when starting your search. Check to see if you can transfer existing debt from your various credit cards to your new lower-interest credit card.

They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

acupuncture
August 17th, 2008
In addition to its efficacy in relieving pain and other chronic conditions, acupuncture has gained in popularity because of several additional advantages:
It lacks the side effects associated with many medications and surgical treatments in Western medicine.
It is highly cost-effective; it may be used early in the course of a disease, potentially saving the patient the cost of hospitalizations, laboratory tests, and high-priced drugs.
It can easily be combined with other forms of therapy, including psychotherapy.
It is noninvasive.
It carries relatively few risks.
Electroacupuncture. In this form of acupuncture, the traditional acupuncture points are stimulated by an electronic device instead of a needle.
Japanese meridian acupuncture. Japanese acupuncture uses thinner, smaller needles, and focuses on the meridians rather than on specific points along their course.
Korean hand acupuncture. Traditional Korean medicine regards the hand as a map of the entire body, such that any part of the body can be treated by stimulating the corresponding point on the hand.
Western medical acupuncture. Western physicians trained in this style of acupuncture insert needles into so-called trigger points in sore muscles, as well as into the traditional points used in Chinese medicine.
Ear acupuncture. This technique regards the ear as having acupuncture points that correspond to other parts of the body. Ear acupuncture is often used to treat substance abuse and chronic pain syndromes.
Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention is widely practiced in the United States. An estimated 15 million Americans have undergone acupuncture, and about five million undergo the treatment each year. People may find the procedure painless, although some points in some patients may be quite sensitive. Depending on your practitioner, the needles may be twirled or warmed. There are many state acupuncture organizations, and many states also have acupuncture regulations and codes. Almost every state has a State Acupuncture Board, and there are more than 50 accredited schools of acupuncture in the U.S. Widely practiced around the world, especially in Asia (the practice originated in China) and Europe, acupuncture didnt gain a notable following in the U.S. until the 1970s, after President Richard Nixons visit to the Peoples Republic of China. James Reston, a member of the press corps accompanying Nixon, also piqued public interest when he wrote about how physicians in Beijing eased his post-surgery abdominal pain with needles. Acupuncture has been gaining popularity in the U.S. ever since.

So can we put in an early bid for Showaddywaddy getting something next time round?
It can only be a matter of time before she ditches Blue Note classicism for the electro-clash rock of Klaxons (new at No 2), the garage-grime frontline rhyme of Jamie T (in at No 4), or the mockney rap of Just Jack (at No 6, innit).

The Better Business Bureau in Colorado Springs is warning people to beware of scam artists called “travelers.” The term is given to people who go door-to-door and offer home repairs. The Better Business Bureau says they often leave homes in worse shape after a repair. The term “traveler” is given because they constantly move from city to city. Another scam involves spraying roofs with sealant. The product is often low quality and could wash off with the next rain. In some cases, the sales people use colored water or paint mixed with water. The price typically is exaggerated from what reputable companies would charge.
Twenty-eight homes in Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake will get some free sprucing up this summer thanks to a youth volunteer group. The national group, World Changers, will be here July 14-21 to do rehabilitation work on 28 homes of low-income, disabled and elderly residents of the two cities. Work could include new roofs, porches, wheelchair ramps or siding, as well as repairs to decks, patios and fences and yard and landscaping work. The work and materials will all be free to the residents.

Were always looking 10 years into the future and attempting to get there in five years. The two essential keys to this are effective communications and employee education. The benefits of having a building connected directly with its management firm go beyond management issues, however. With each building wired into our database, serving both Colliers ABR and Colliers International and its more than 190 offices worldwide, every building can be queried by any of our Colliers partners to determine availabilities. This has an added advantage if we are the leasing agents for the building, where we can provide space listings instantaneously.Computerized maintenance programs in office buildings are another trend that have been in the marketplace for several years and continue to grow in strength. These programs provide the ability to schedule and generate work orders, manage preventive maintenance tasks, track all equipment histories, organize and track inventories, manage purchasing functions, maintain complete confidential labor records, and allocate resources. Dynamic data is tracked by the system, thereby projecting equipment failure before it happens. A problem can be fixed before it occurs, avoiding costly downtime. Ideally, this program can be linked to a headquarters operation which can then manage all the building systems.
Atco Properties Management announced that Miriam S. Mucchi has been appointed as general manager of The Shops at Atlas Park. In her new position, Mucchi will be responsible for managing the property, the staff and the tenant relations at The Shops. Mucchi holds a B.S. in management from St. Johns University and an M.A. in public administration from John Jay College. She is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers.
In todays highly competitive and stagnant real estate market, property managers have become increasingly important, playing a value-added role, enabling landlords to maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace. However, to truly succeed in property management today, it requires more than a basic knowledge of Property Management 101, it demands a highly sophisticated, state-of-the-art approach. No longer is property management defined as merely collecting rent, changing light bulbs and coordinating service contracts.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.
Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.

The writer, Stephen Dinsdale, met someone about 20 years ago called Gus Gascoigne, who fitted the prototype, and he wanted to immortalize him. Ive been playing the same character for over a year now and sometimes I think, why am I doing this? Then I get a second wind. There are times when I run through little sections and I feel I havent put anything into it, but then Ill find new things to spur me on. Going from place to place can be very disorientating, but at least it keeps me interested, as Ive never seen most of England before. Swimming PoolIn the design and manufacturing of pre-fabricated aboveground pools, the cost of fabrication continues to be a major concern. Pools have to be manufactured in a variety of styles and sizes to accommodate the available space requirements of the customer and the variety of components necessary for manufacturing is quite large. Designs that can incorporate this flexibility and reduce the necessary inventory required to accommodate a variety of sizes and structures have begun to arrive in the above ground swimming pool manufacturing marketplace creating easier systems to erect without sacrificing stability.

Freight transport saw a surge in harbour transport and an over 10% increase in road transport. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 5.4% in the final quarter, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport rose even more, by 9.7%. Although road freight transport declined by a few per cent in Q3, its annual increase in 2006 still reached a high 9.8%, which contributed significantly to the total increase in the transport, storage, and communications sector (road freight transport generates almost a quarter of the value added in this sector). Maritime freight transport fell by 6.4% in 2006 after having surged by 41.7% in 2005 amid the boom in this branch. In the final quarter of 2006, the volume of maritime transport already rose by 4.4%, year on year. Harbour freight transport recorded the biggest increase in Q4, by 17.0%. It also enjoyed the highest annual growth within freight transport (22.5%). Road freight transport has been growing strongly in the past few years, including in 2006, due to the increasing international transport (see the graph). The volume of international road freight transport increased by 12.5% in 2006 while national road freight transport even fell by 3.5%. Within international transport, cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country) recorded the highest increase of 16.4%. Measured in tonne kilometres, international transport comprised 81.2% of the total transport of goods by road while national transport totalled 18.8% of the total road freight transport (if the volume of transport is measured solely in tonnes of goods carried and the travelled distances are disregarded, national transport prevails with a 82.5% share). 56.3% of international transport was performed by companies, while slightly over 50% of national transport was carried out by sole entrepreneurs. Own-account transport comprised 3.0% of international transport and 31.1% of national transport (the rest was transport for hire or reward).

As art jewelry comes into its own in America, galleries are clasping onto the trend and finding success with the art/jewelry mix. Throughout the world, body ornamentation is an ancient and time-honored art form. Yet in the United States, jewelry as art has only recently come into its own. The distinction between mass-produced jewelry and art jewelry is not just in the quantity but the design, said jewelry artist Gretchen Kubacky of Los Angeles. Ive seen some stunningly high-quality designs in a department store that wouldnt be considered fine art, and Ive seen $5,000 diamond earrings that have no design quality to them. Art is in the eye of the beholder.
Located in the heart of downtown Decatur in a original 1929 stained glass and marble storefront is a shop which stands out from all the rest: Eichhorn Jewelry. A full-service jewelry store, Eichhorns specializes in customer satisfaction. Not only does it offer quality products, it also gives customers quality time, educating them about their purchases. Whether shopping in the store or over the phone, their customers have given them the best referrals. In addition to the areas finest collection of diamonds, gemstones, gold jewelry and watches, Eichhorns offers an extensive collection of unusual colored stone rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets, and estate jewelry.
At first look, Eichhorn Jewelry store in downtown Decatur looks like hundreds of other jewelry stores in hundreds of other communities across the country with brightlylit show windows on either side of the front entrance to entice customers. On closer examination, however, its not youre typical jewelry store, it is a very special place. Patrons first impression of the 35 yearold store is “WOW!” One-hundred yearold vertical display cases with huge windows that slide up on the north wall are expertly lit to highlight eclectic groupings of jewelry. Unlike most stores, the main showcases, the ones John Eichhorn started his business with in 1965, are situated in the center of the showroom rather than along the sides and are also antiques. The floor cases are from 1929 when Keller Jewelry was located in the Eichhorn building. The diamond sorting table in a back room is a 100-year-old wooden library table that was left behind by the previous owner of the building who was also a jeweler. From the showroom one can peer down a short hall at the end of the store to the large steel door of the vault where the company places its valuable inventory every evening. The vault used to be part of the First National Bank in Adams County, which was the only one that didnt shut down in the crash of 1929.

For the third year running, the Camping and Caravanning Club, in association with the National Caravan Council, is continuing its highly popular “Start Caravanning” initiative to give beginners the chance to experience towing a caravan for themselves. Visitors will get the chance to correctly hitch a caravan and then tow it behind a car on the roads around the exhibition centre. This will be under the supervision of the clubs expert Caravan Manoeuvring Course instructors. Damien Field, the clubs activities co-ordinator, says: “We have six club caravans, and all visitors have to do is pass an eye test and produce a valid driving licence. We will be able to take them around the NEC grounds and also local public roads so they will get the full towing experience.” Is it going to be difficult? “No, we dont ask anyone to do any complicated reversing; it is really a question of building up their confidence. We find that the majority of visitors are seriously considering caravanning but have never had the opportunity. They need to get used to the extra weight and the longer braking distances involved. There will be six different towing vehicles supplied by Club-Autosafe, so I think that everyone will be able to find a good combination of car and caravan that they feel comfortable with.” After 30 minutes you may well find yourself hooked.
From Mr Robert Price Sir: The one and only fact in John Lyttles article “Dear Caravaners” (24 July) is that West Country police have found a high level of faults in caravans. This is clearly a real problem, and most responsible caravaners would welcome a safety certificate for caravans. Caravaning appeals to ordinary people for a variety of reasons. Families and retired people need economy holidays, others want to be in the countryside without the primitive discomforts of a tent in our unpredictable climate. We may not all share Mr Lyttles idea of good taste, whatever it may be, but that is none of his business.

The charges are divided between kidnapping and murder; he is specifically charged with kidnapping in 19 cases where the bodies have yet to be found and murder in the 55 cases where the bodies have been recovered. The victims were lawyers, doctors, professors, ex- governors and local politicians, all of them well known in Chile. Carmen Hertz, a lawyer for the prosecution, said there are 16 tomes, more than 12,000 pages of evidence, proving Pinochets knowledge of the actions carried out by General Stark. The investigating Judge Guzman has set a precedent in his investigation of the Death Caravan case by establishing that kidnapping charges cannot by covered by the amnesty laws in Chile because the cases remain open until bodies can be found and the date of death established.

You can do it yourself, listening to vendors who want to sell you their products or services, reading whatever you can find on the subject, and hunting down advice from those whove undertaken similar projects. Or you can ease your burden by hiring a computer consultant. Computer consultants typically specialize in one or more areas. Areas of specialization include specific categories of hardware and software; specific types of clients, such as medical or legal offices; general office automation; networking; and Web services. Most consultants target their services to businesses, but some work with home users.

Me, Myself, My Team - How to become an effective team player using NLP By Angus McLeod Publisher: Crown House ISBN: 1899836381 The book seeks to explain what turns a good team into a great team and is intended to provide the reader with effective strategies to improve your teams communication and motivation, discover new perceptions and begin new courses of action. Founded on the belief that openness and flexibility are the keys to personal effectiveness, it promotes the need for real empowerment of each team member. The book costs £12.99, which does seem to me to be expensive for 127 pages and is not a book I myself would buy. The book is repetitive of much information that is available in many other books; after all most Management Services Practitioners would be well aware that big goals need to be broken down into smaller goals without reading about this in the book.

It is the fourth time for the U.S. military to carry out NLP at the Atsugi base since March last year.

MagnetismAccording to their behavior in inhomogeneous magnetic fields, materials can be classified into three main categories: diamagnetic , paramagnetic, and ferromagnetic. Paramagnetic materials are attracted into a magnetic field. The main cause of this effect is the presence in the material of atoms that have a net magnetic moment composed of electron spin and orbital contributions.

Formerly (C)work What has the Web ever done to them? Well, it seems their reasons for rejecting the Internet are what you might expect. According to Pew, many people lack the resources, financial and otherwise, to go online. Some dont have the social connections that pull so many first-timers on board. And others have just had it with poor connection speed. In short, they fall outside of the affluent, educated suburbanites and guys without dates, which studies have shown, dominate usage.
Does your shop have a stack of metal youre not likely to use? Maybe the metal is common or exotic, or maybe you ordered stock for a job that fell through. Regardless, that stack is just sitting there gathering dust, and youd love to free up the space and maybe turn the metal into cash at the same time. With lean manufacturing and 5S offering effective methods for making contract manufacturing and machining businesses more competitive, monetizing dormant metals stock and maximizing square footage just makes sense. And no one needs to tell you about the costs of locating and buying metals these days.
